Oral hygiene

As the structure of the teeth is an important factor in a beautiful smile, the patient is obliged to observe perfect oral hygiene while wearing braces.

After fixing the braces the teeth become a retention point at which it is easy to accumulate plaque and food leftovers, various colouring materials and bacteria. As a result of inadequate hygiene the tooth enamel demineralizes and gets destroyed. In the end, after removing the braces there may be chalk-looking white spots on the teeth, inflammation and swelling of the gums, which decrease the aesthetics of a smile to a large degree.

Thus, it is improper oral hygiene during treatment, that can lead to the damage of the dental enamel, not the brackets system.

What kind of brushes are needed to clean teeth while wearing braces?

  • A special orthodontic toothbrush that has a v-cut, which makes cleaning of the teeth with braces easy.
  • Interdental brush – to clean plaque between the orthodontic arch and teeth and around braces.

  • Dental floss (floss) will clean out the remnants of food stuck between the teeth.

  • Oral irrigator (water pick) - a special device that delivers a powerful pulsing water pressure; it is especially useful when wearing the braces. Such device allows:
    1. washing away food debris and plaque from hard to reach areas between the teeth and periodontal folds
    2. massaging the gums to improve their blood supply
3.applying the liquid medicines and flavorings
Adjustable water pressure allows the use of irrigator for adults and children.
  • Antiseptic mouth rinse provides daily protection from such common problems encountered during orthodontic treatment, as gum inflammation, ulcers, dental calculus, demineralization of tooth enamel, halitosis (bad breath).

How to brush your teeth while wearing braces?

You need to clean them in the morning after awakening and at night before bedtime, as well as after every meal. So, you should always have with you a brush and floss during treatment you, especially at school, while traveling, on vacation or business trip, when visiting restaurants.

  • First clean the teeth in the direction of the chewing surfaces with sweeping motion, then clean the chewing and the lingual surfaces of the teeth and finish with brushing in a circular motion, massaging the gums and scraping the tongue.

  • The brush is used at the next stage. To clean the space between the orthodontic arch and tooth surface, as well as around braces make movements up and down, placing the brush under the arc from the chewing surfaces of teeth.
  • Using the dental floss, clean inaccessible for the brush interdental spaces. The floss is put into the space between the arch and teeth, and then - between the teeth. Cleaning should be done carefully, in order not to damage the gums.
  • At the end of cleaning, use antiseptic mouth rinse.

It is important to carry out self-monitoring after each cleaning. Choosing the cleanest teeth and comparing the other teeth will it will help you understand how carefully you have cleaned the teeth (the average duration of cleaning is 6-10 minutes).
